How to choose your mattress depends on your individual needs
1.Size-As a general rule, the length should be at least 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) longer that the tallest person. Choosing the width depends on the size of the room and the number of people who will be using it. If you’re buying a mattress as a couple, a standard double bed only gives about 24 inches (2 feet) width per person. For a more comfortable sleep a Queen or King size may be considered, subject to room space. The thickness of the mattress is a matter of individual choice and height of the cot. A thicker mattress can be chosen for cots with low floor clearance.
2.Level of firmness/softness
The ideal mattress firmness depends on your weight. Firmness (mattress-wise) is a measure of how much you ‘sink’ into your mattress when lying down. The aim is to minimise this ‘sinking’ and maintain spinal alignment (i.e. your spine should be straight when lying on your side). The heavier you are, the firmer your mattress should be.Mattress firmness is also a matter of personal choice, if you’re comfortable sleeping on the floor with little cushioning, you’ll probably like a firm mattress. If you love ‘sinking’ into your bed, you’ll like your mattress soft. For the most part, medium firmness is accepted by most people.
Irrespective of your personal preference, you maybe advised one for medical purposes.
4.Sleeping position determines the kind of mattress you should choose
Most people are predominantly side sleeper. They sleep in either the foetal position (with their knees drawn up toward their chest) or modified foetal position with one knee extended. This position tends to put pressure on your hips and shoulders. For side and foetal sleepers, relatively softer mattresses are recommended. Foam mattresses can conform to your body shape padding the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine.
If you are a prone to sleeping on your stomach, you are better served with a firm mattress or a hard mattress with a quilt-top. A soft mattress would not support your abdomen and the subsequent ‘sinking’ of your body would cause your spine to arch or bend resulting in back pain. In this instance the firm to hard mattresses would provide optimum support.
And finally, if you sleep on your back, additional support using a thin pillow under your knees and lower back is recommended. But, you can typically get away with most type of mattresses
